Welcome to Kaituna Homestead Bed and Breakfast
Alastair is the sheep farmer, Penelope the cook and gardener. Your charming hosts escaped the rigours of life in motor sport and the music industry in Europe for the peace and quiet of the stunning Kaituna Valley on Banks Peninsula making this historic Homestead their home.
Penelope was born not 40 minutes drive from the farm in the French settlement of Akaroa, and Alastair instantly fell in love with the rugged environment of the Peninsula which reminds him of his native Wales.
These two share a passion for getting things right and have been bringing the house and garden back to life. A long process Penelope acknowledges; but she loves the atmosphere of her enormous kitchen with her beloved Aga cooker brought over from England. Alastair’s craftsmanship is regularly put to use on the farm’s restoration projects.
About the Homestead
Kaituna Homestead is a romantic idyll, 40 minutes drive from Christchurch International Airport. Close enough for a stop on the way south or to explore the Peninsula, especially the enchanting Akaroa, or have a day skiing at Mt Hutt. (1hour and 20 mins drive away).

You can probably talk Penelope into having a fabulous meal waiting for you when you get back. Alastair will pour a New Zealand wine, you can eat in the bay window of the sitting room, or library or maybe you will be invited to the big table in the kitchen, before falling into a big bed with pure linen sheets and fluffy duvet with the only sound being the call of the occasional Morepork.
In the morning be on your way after a delicious breakfast; if you have time Alastair may proudly show you his South Suffolk stud flock.
We invite you to experience warm New Zealand hospitality in this Heritage Homestead with the all the comforts and great country cooking.

Reviewed 18 April 2012 NEWThree of us stayed at the Homestead in March, and had a very memorable visit thanks to the grand house, gorgeous gardens, sheep, ducks… and of course the hosts. Penelope was the ultimate concierge, arranging helicopter pickup in her front yard, making a 3-course breakfast, taking care of laundry, abandoned rental-cars, and just about anything one could think of. We felt as though we were in a 5-star country retreat with a London high street Bank Manager as our personal assistant. She can probably arrange good weather if you stay there.
Room Tip: Both rooms are great!
Reviewed 11 March 2012A privilege to share your beautiful home and surrounds: sumptuous food, quality lodgings and superb hospitality. Peaceful and isolated, yet very close to Christchurch. Highly recommended for a special experience.
Stayed February 2012, travelled with friends.

Kaituna Homestead – B&B”“
Reviewed 16 January 2012Stay at Kaituna B& B recently – stayed for one night but wished it was for more – unfortunately had a flight to catch the following day. However, the night spent at Kaituna was the perfect way to finish off our tour of the South Island. Penelope and Alastair were the perfect hosts – nothing was problem for them (not that there were any problems). From the moment that we arrived we were greeted and treated as old friends. The Homestead is magnificent – the rooms generous and comfortable. The food – sensational. The Homestead is the perfect spot for a quiet getaway
